Overview

General information:

The Marine Institute NE Atlantic ROMS (www.myroms.org) predictive model with a 2.5 km resolution and 40 S levels uses the latest Irish SWATH bathymetry over most of the domain. Forecasts are made of tides and storm surges, as well as temperature, salinity and 3D velocity. 35 major rivers are reperesented in the model. Tidal potential for 26 constituents is applied as a body force and tidal boundary conditions come from TPXO 7. The model is nested into Mercator PSY2V3R1. Surface forcing comes from NCEP GFS, using the bulk aerodynamic flux compuations within ROMS. Following trials, the model will soon be supplemented with bio-geochemical fields and suspended sediment.

Processing information:

The model is run every week day in the morning. This will be extended to the weekend soon. Outputs from the model are regridded to a regular lat-lon-z grid and these data, as well as the original curvilinear history files (aggregated in time) are output to our Thredds server at http://milas.marine.ie/thredds. Data normally appears at approximately 1200 UTC as well as jpeg animations at http://www.marine.ie/home/services/operational/oceanography/OceanForecast.htm Strom surge data is output to the ECOOP Matroos portal.

Description of observation methods/instruments:

Weekly model validation data and comparisons appears on the Marine Institute web site at http://www.marine.ie/home/services/operational/oceanography/ModelValidation.htm

Presently this comprises intercomparisons with all ARGO profiles made within the last week and with sea level intercomparisons with Irish coastal tide gauges. This will soon be supplemented with microwave radiometer brightness temperature intercomparisons with model SST.
