Overview

General information:

The Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST) Portuguese Coast Operational Modelling System MOHID (www.mohid.com) forecast system downscales with 5-6 km resolution and 50 vertical levels from the PSY2V3 Mercator Ocean solution for the North Atlantic, with tidal forcing from a 2D barotropic model forced by FES2004 global solution and the ocean-atmosphere interface forcing is provided by the weather forecast system operated also at IST using the MM5 regional scale model. The 3 days forecasts consist of temperature, salinity, currents and sea level.

Processing information:

The model is run everyday in the morning. Results are available online around 1200 UTC and PNG maps are publish currently at http://www.mohid.com/operational/. The outputs are converted to netcdf, processed and made available via a Thredds server at http://data.mohid.com:8080/thredds/catalog/MohidAll/pcoms/.

Description of observation methods/instruments:

Model validation and comparisons are made daily with the available data: coastal buoys operated by Instituto Hidrografico (Portugal) and Puertos del Estado (Spain); remote sensing data (MODIS, MISST-GODAE, GHRSST-OSTIA), and will soon be made available online.
